Gotha, Germany (above), is the birthplace of A.H. Hempel, who visited western Orange County, Florida, in 1879. The frontier area greatly appealed to him, so he settled here, then enticed others to join him. In 1885 Gotha village was born. Hempel was instrumental in creating community infrastructure: postal service, citrus groves, a sawmill, & general store. Gotha’s main street bears his name; the “downtown” area of a three-way stop sign & four commercial properties was a hub of his early efforts.

One concurrent visitor was Dr. Henry Nehrling, an ornotholgist (studies birds),  botanist (studies plants), & naturalist. The last term describes those who believe the world may be understood through scientific inquiry (Darwin died in 1882). Nehrling created a botanical laboratory in Gotha, & perfected cross-breeding of caladium, among other species.

Florida’s citrus industry remains strong, & some groves still exist in Gotha. Most real estate has been developed fully.

We enjoy all A schools: Thornebrooke Elementary, Gotha Middle, & Olympia High.
